Breathwork for Emotional Awareness

What to Expect

This 60-minute guided journey creates a safe, structured container to feel, process, and release emotions that you may have been carrying—sometimes for years. Using a combination of gentle activation breathing and somatic inquiry, we’ll explore the landscape of your emotional body with curiosity and compassion.

This session recognizes that emotions aren’t problems to solve—they’re information, energy, and often, incomplete experiences that need to move through your system. We’ll use breath to access emotions that live beneath conscious awareness, give them space to be felt fully, and support their natural release.

The journey includes periods of coached breathing, silence for internal exploration, gentle prompts to locate emotions in your body, and practices to process and integrate what arises.

Physical sensations you may experience include: tightness in chest or throat (especially if grief is present), warmth or tingling, tears or crying, shaking or trembling (this is your nervous system releasing), heaviness or lightness in your body, and waves of sensation moving through you.

Emotionally, expect to touch feelings you may have been avoiding—sadness, anger, fear, grief, shame, loneliness. You may also access unexpected joy, gratitude, or relief. This work creates space for the full spectrum of human emotion. Nothing is too much. Nothing is unwelcome.

Mentally, you may gain insights about patterns, relationships, or old wounds. Many participants report finally understanding why they react certain ways or what they’ve been protecting themselves from.

This is medium-intensity work—more activating than the sleep session, gentler than the energy activation session. It’s calibrated specifically for emotional processing.

Who This Is For

  • Anyone who feels emotionally numb, disconnected, or “stuck”
  • People who intellectualize emotions but struggle to actually feel them
  • Those carrying unprocessed grief, loss, or heartbreak
  • Individuals who experience emotional overwhelm and need tools to process feelings without being flooded
  • People who were taught to suppress emotions and want to reclaim their emotional intelligence
  • Those in therapy who want somatic tools to complement talk-based processing
  • Anyone navigating major life transitions (divorce, career change, loss, identity shifts)
  • People who cry easily but feel like the emotions never fully release
  • Those who struggle with anger and need safe ways to express it
  • Anyone curious about the connection between emotions and physical sensations

This work is especially powerful for:

  • Completing grief processes that feel stuck or unfinished
  • Releasing resentment or anger you’ve been holding
  • Processing fear that’s been running your decisions
  • Reconnecting with joy or aliveness after periods of depression
  • Understanding your emotional patterns and where they come from

This Session May Not Be Suitable If You:

Contraindications:

  • Are in active crisis or acute psychiatric emergency (please seek immediate professional help)
  • Have been hospitalized for mental health in the past 3 months without clearance from your provider
  • Have active psychosis or severe dissociative disorders without therapeutic support
  • Are currently in early stages of trauma recovery (within 3 months) without working with a trauma therapist
  • Have severe unmanaged PTSD with frequent flashbacks
  • Are pregnant with complications (gentle emotional work is generally safe, but check with your provider)
  • Have cardiovascular conditions, recent surgery, or severe asthma (moderate breathing may trigger symptoms)

Please consult with me first if:

  • You have a trauma history and aren’t currently working with a therapist
  • You experience dissociation or depersonalization
  • You’re on psychiatric medications (especially benzodiazepines or mood stabilizers)
  • You have a history of panic attacks
  • You’re in early sobriety or recovery (within 90 days)
  • You have significant attachment wounds or complex PTSD

Important: This work can bring up intense material. If you’re unsure whether this is right for you, let’s have a conversation first. I want this to be healing, not destabilizing.

How to Prepare

What to Bring:

  • Yoga mat or comfortable floor space
  • Pillow for head and possibly one for under knees
  • Blanket (emotions often come with temperature changes)
  • Eye pillow or eye mask (helps with internal focus)
  • Tissues (tears are not just welcomed—they’re often the point)
  • Water bottle
  • Journal and pen
  • Comfort items if desired (small stone, photo, meaningful object)

Before the Session:

  • Eat lightly 1-2 hours before
  • Hydrate throughout the day
  • Avoid alcohol or substances for 24 hours prior
  • Wear comfortable, non-restrictive clothing
  • Remove jewelry, glasses, anything constraining
  • Use the restroom
  • Silence all devices
  • Arrive 10 minutes early to settle in

Mental and Emotional Preparation:

  • Set an intention (examples: “I’m willing to feel what I’ve been avoiding,” “I’m here to release what no longer serves me,” “I want to understand my grief”)
  • Release expectations about what “should” come up
  • Give yourself permission to feel without editing, fixing, or understanding it in the moment
  • Trust that your system knows what it’s ready to process
  • Remember: you’re not doing this alone—you’ll be guided and held throughout

After the Session:

  • Clear at least 90 minutes with no obligations
  • Have nourishing food available (emotional processing takes energy)
  • Plan for gentle activities—walking, bathing, resting, journaling
  • Avoid difficult conversations or conflict
  • Don’t jump back into screens or work
  • Be gentle with yourself—you may feel tender, raw, or surprisingly light
  • Drink water and rest
  • Some emotions may continue processing over the next 24-48 hours—this is normal

Additional Information

Session Structure:

  • Opening circle, grounding, and intention setting (10 min)
  • Foundational breathwork and body awareness (10 min)
  • Active emotional exploration with guided breathing (25 min)
  • Integration, processing, and gentle closure breathing (10 min)
  • Closing circle and optional sharing (5 min)

The Approach: This isn’t about forcing emotions to surface or performing catharsis. We’re creating conditions—through breath, safety, and invitation—where emotions that are ready to move can finally do so. Your nervous system is wise. It won’t release what you’re not ready to process.

We use the breath to:

  • Create enough activation to access emotions beneath the surface
  • Maintain enough presence to feel emotions without being overwhelmed
  • Support the natural completion of emotional cycles
  • Build your capacity to be with difficult feelings

Somatic Emotional Processing: Traditional approaches often try to understand or explain emotions. This work is different—we locate emotions in the body as sensations (tightness, heat, heaviness, etc.) and breathe into them, allowing them to move and release. This is how emotions are actually designed to work.

Music: The journey is accompanied by emotionally evocative music that supports feeling without directing what you should feel. Expect ambient soundscapes, gentle instrumentation, and occasional vocals that help open the heart.

What Participants Report:

  • “I finally cried about my divorce—two years later”
  • “I didn’t know I was carrying so much anger until I felt it move through me”
  • “I feel lighter, like I put down a backpack I didn’t know I was wearing”
  • “I accessed grief for my childhood that I’ve been intellectualizing for years”
  • “I laughed and cried at the same time—it was the most free I’ve felt”
  • “I understand now why I keep choosing the same patterns”

Integration Support: Emotional processing doesn’t end when the session does. I provide:

  • Post-session journaling prompts
  • Integration practices you can use at home
  • Community support through our platform
  • Optional follow-up check-ins

This Work Is Not:

  • Therapy (though it complements therapeutic work beautifully)
  • A guarantee that specific emotions will arise
  • Always comfortable (emotional growth rarely is)
  • About getting rid of emotions—it’s about completing them

This Work Is:

  • A practice in being with what is
  • Training your nervous system to handle emotional intensity
  • Reclaiming your full range of human feeling
  • Healing through feeling, not thinking

Confidentiality: What’s shared in the circle stays in the circle. Your emotional process is yours. You’re welcome to share afterward if you wish, but there’s zero pressure.

Investment: $25-40 sliding scale
